Our
School
The Progressive Montessori Academy embodies the philosophies of Dr. Maria Montessori. Our CASA program offers a rich supplement of natural and physical sciences, cultural studies, fine arts and perceptual motor training that enriches the child's daily life and sparks an interest for his or her future studies. Early childhood education is most effective when the child's natural curiosity is encouraged and rewarded. Attending our school is a positive growth experience for all individuals - student as well as parents. Many of the same teaching principles employed in the Casa program are continued in the elementary program. Montessori classrooms contain multi-age groupings which allow students to work through the material at their own pace. This also helps to foster social development, understanding, and patience. Within elementary classrooms, children are presented with a wide range of materials which allow the students to develop both abstract and practical thinking while mastering the curriculum. As children progress from Casa to the Elementary Program, the Montessori philosophy continues to nurture unique, confident, and peaceful human beings. The year begins with The Great Lesson, an inspirational and intriguing introduction to our Universe. It is important for each child realize their place in this world and that he or she is connected to everything in it. From this point, children work at an individual pace and based on personal interests, while venturing into areas of geography, botany, zoology, arithmetic, geometry, language, and science. With the use of concrete Montessori materials, children are given the opportunity to manipulate and comprehend concepts in all subject areas with the use of their five senses. This provides the skills and tools to take a concrete concept to the level of abstract understanding. The Elementary Program also encourages the ‘going out’ experience for all children, where an interest can be taken far beyond the four walls of the classroom. A basic lesson on Geometric Figures may spark a child’s interest and create a fire within them which can lead to research on pyramids, visits to the ROM, and anywhere else that will foster this interests.
